Details : Keith Fergus is a freelance writer and photographer who lives in Neilston Renfrewshire. Amongst his main areas of interest is Galloway – his latest book entitled “25 Walks along the Galloway Coast” was published in May 2012.

Details : Our 222nd Annual Dinner will be held in the Murray Arms Hotel, Gatehouse of Fleet on Saturday 5th October 2013. Our three guest speakers are now in place – The Very Reverend William Hewitt – Captain Val Plant and Mrs Sheelagh Afia. Reverend Hewitt was Minister at Westburn Church Greenock for many years and also a former Moderator of The Church of Scotland having served in that position from 2009-2010. He is at present Clerk to the Presbytery of Glasgow. He and his wife Moira have a caravan at Cardoness near Gatehouse of Fleet hence his Galloway connection. Val Plant is a Captain with P & O Ferries operating between Cairnryan – Larne and Troon and last but not least Mrs Sheelagh Afia who is chairperson of Women’s Rural for Wigtownshire. All three are very accomplished and often humorous speakers and I am sure we can look forward to a most enjoyable evening. Further details of the dinner will follow when they become available.

Details : The venue for this years Spring Outing is Glenwhan Gardens on Sunday 19th May. The Gardens are situated near Dunragit a few miles east of Stranraer. Afternoon tea has been organised at the tearoom within the grounds.
Please meet at 1pm in the car park which is situated near the entrance. After visiting the gardens, please meet at the tearoom at 3pm for the Special General Meeting of the Association, followed by afternoon tea at 3.15pm.

Details : The pre-AGM speaker is Sandy Rankin, Vice-President of the Association. Sandy will recount the tragic story of Paisley mill girl Rachel Douglas who was killed in an accident at Portpatrick Station in 1909. She had been on a rail excursion to the seaside village.
Speaker : Sandy Rankin was born in Portpatrick. At the age of 12 he moved with his parents to Stirlingshire, but still considers himself a Gallovidian. In 1959 Sandy joined the British South Africa Police in what was then Southern Rhodesia, where he served for the next three years. He returned home in 1962, when he joined The City of Glasgow Police, retiring in April 1993.

Details : Dane Love will present a talk entitled "Covenanters in Galloway". Dane is the author of numerous magazine articles and books including "Scottish Covenanter Stories" and "The Covenanter Encyclopaedia". From 1638 to 1688 the Covenanters fought for religious freedom, to keep Kirk and State separate from each other. During that time many suffered persecution, banishment and death for their religious beliefs, and throughout Galloway there are places associated with the Covenanters. This meeting was postponed from Saturday 4th February 2012.

Details : Our 221st Annual Dinner will be held in the Murray Arms Hotel, Gatehouse of Fleet on Saturday 6th October 2012 at 6pm for 6.30pm. The Principal Speaker will be Mr Allan Smith from Stranraer. Mr Smith studied Law at Edinburgh University eventually returning to Stranraer where he served as a Procurator Fiscal, Defence Lawyer and also an Honorary Sheriff. In his leisure time he is the Match Announcer for Stranraer Football Club at Stair Park. Mr Smith will propose the toast to Glasgow and The Galloway Association of Glasgow.
The address to A’ th’ Wives an’ Weans will be given by Mr Fraser Simpson, Head Teacher Dalry Secondary School. Mr Simpson taught in various schools in Stirlingshire before moving to Douglas Ewart High School Newton Stewart, Stranraer Academy and eventually Dalry Secondary.
The response on behalf of A’ th’ Wives an’ Weans will be given by Miss Kate Higgins, who resides in Edinburgh and is a Policy Officer with CHILDREN1st formerly the SSPCC. She gained an MA Degree in History at St Andrews University and has also appeared on television and radio introducing programmes on political issues.

Details : The Association is hosting a unique event in the North West Castle in Stranraer commencing at 5pm on Saturday 2nd June 2012. Well known local historian Jack Hunter will help Allan Little recount fascinating tales from his experience as a journalist across the globe. Followed by complimentary light refreshments and an opportunity to network. This event is fully subscribed, and no more Complimentary Tickets are available.

Details : our summer outing is a visit to Portpatrick in Wigtownshire on Saturday 26th May, to coincide with the naming ceremony of the new Portpatrick lifeboat at 2pm at the Harbour. We plan to meet at 1pm at the Lighthouse, after which you are welcome to watch the naming ceremony, enjoy Portpatrick's delights or visit Dunskey Gardens (pay your own entrance fee). Details : The pre-AGM speaker is Ian Ruthven whose talk will centre round "Louis McGuffie" from Wigtown, who was awarded the Victoria Cross during World War 1. Louie was an acting Sergeant in the KOSB, and was killed in action at Wytschaete, Belgium in 1918.

Details : David Kirkwood will give an illustrated talk entitled "Policing the Irish in Galloway". He will describe early policing in Wigtownshire, when sizeable numbers of Irish immigrants resided throughout the county, through its evolution into today's professional police force. David was born in Garlieston and is a former local Police Superintendent and author.

Details : Our Summer Outing is a visit to Logan Botanic Gardens in Wigtownshire. Details : Prior to the AGM, there will be a presentation on the history of the Association. The presentation recounts the story of the association from its creation over two hundred years ago, and its evolution into today’s Independent Scottish Charitable Trust. Details : Author Julia C MacDonald will be talking about her fascinating new work "U Boat! Shipping Losses Along the Wigtownshire Coast in the First World War." Julia's book details how the reality of war was brought home to the people of Wigtownshire when the deadly U Boats brought death and destruction to the area's coast. The busy off shore shipping lanes proved to be a tempting target for this weapon of stealth.

Details : The first Winter Meeting of the new year is on Saturday 6th February 2010 at 7.30pm when one of our Members, Sandy Rankin, will give an illustrated presentation about Dr. Leandar Starr Jameson, who lived in Stranraer where his father was the Editor of the Wigtownshire Free Press. Despite his involvement with the infamous "Jameson Raid" in the Transvaal, Jameson had a successful political life following the invasion, receiving many honours in later life.

Details : Sandy Rankin will present details of the loss of the Clyde-built SS Rowan off Corsewall Point on 9th October 1921. The fatalities included members of the Southern Syncopated Orchestra, who were booked to play at the Scala in Dublin after a successful run at the Lyric Theatre in Glasgow. Sandy’s family were closely involved in the tragedy – his grandfather was a crew member of the Portpatrick Lifeboat which launched to assist, and his wife’s great grandfather was Captain Brown of the Rowan.

Details : Our speaker is Brian Hall of the Stranraer campus of Dumfries and Galloway College. He will describe the recent visit by a group of Stranraer College students to the mystical mountain country of Nepal. The Association provided a generous donation towards this Nepal expedition for the students, to learn about Nepal and its people.

The speakers include Alex Fergusson, the Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament; Professor Ted Cowan, Director of Dumfries Campus;and Dame Barbara Kelly, chairwoman of the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival.
Alex Fergusson wrote in his article in the Free Press newspaper : "The whole evening was a delight; and I felt honoured to be asked to speak to this most worthy of organisations".

Details : Sandy Rankin, author of the book The Rhinns' Forgotten Aircraft Disaster, will present his research into the story of the disaster and the people involved. Sandy was brought up in Portpatrick before moving to Central Scotland as a youth.

Details : Our speaker at our February meeting on Saturday 4th will be Angus Rex. This illustrated presentation, entitled “Old Scene, New Scene”, is based on the theme of change on the Scottish railway network over the last 40 years, based on his archive of railway slides and photographs. The talk consists of three main railway topics viz Galloway, Scotland and railway preservation in Scotland.
