 1951 Anniversary Dinner Menu

Dinner Menu 1951 : The Association is grateful to Margaret Downey, who kindly provided a copy of the Menu from the Association’s 160th Anniversary Dinner on 1st November 1951. This document provides a wealth of information about both the Association and Glasgow society in the 1950s, an era that began with rationing and austerity and ended with affluence.
The front cover confirms that the Association President, Matt Campbell Esq., was Chairman for the Anniversary Dinner, and that the Honorary Secretary, J. Watson Blair Esq., was Croupier (a croupier is the person who serves as assistant chairman at a dinner party table).
The inside pages describe the Toast List and the list of Artistes. The Rt. Hon. The Lord Provost Sir Victor Warren, M.B.E., C.St.J., T.D., LL.D. proposed the Toast to the Association. The Artistes included Albert Sheath (Piper), Mr. Wm. Robertson (Baritone and Accompanist) and Miss Chris Scorgie (Soprano).
The rear cover describes the mouth-watering menu with each item described in French (the starter was Pamplemousse, which is grapefruit). The Annual Subscription was five shillings (a crown), which equates to approximately £5.50 in 2007. (Page Index)

2007 Anniversary Dinner Menu : It is fascinating to compare and contrast this 2007 Anniversary Dinner Menu with its equivalent document from 1951, an interval of over 50 years.
The front cover confirms that the Association President, Mr. Bobby Rigby, was Chairman of the 216th Anniversary Dinner, held in The Murray Arms Hotel in Gatehouse of Fleet. Over sixty diners attended the Dinner, with participants travelling from all over Britain (including Galloway and Glasgow) and from overseas.
The inside pages describe the Toast List and the Artistes. Joe Campbell proposed the Toast to the Association. The reply from the Chairman listed many of the projects sponsored by the Association during 2007. The much-appreciated singers included Jessie Flockhart, Joe Campbell and Dr. Scott Thomson accompanied on the piano by Doreen Prentice. The inside pages also provide the dinner menu, which included Galloway Beef.
The rear cover provides the verses of George Sproat's "Bonnie Gallowa'", which was sung heartily by the diners accompanied on the piano by the Honorary President, Mrs. Anne Donnan. (Page Index)

Syllabus 1957-58 : The Association is grateful to Eric Wilson, who kindly provided a copy of the Association Syllabus for the season 1957 to 1958. This document provides useful information about the Association's comprehensive and diverse programme of events and of its Office Bearers.
The outside pages of the Syllabus list the Council of Management for 1957-58 and six Patrons including Admiral Sir Frederick H.G. Dalrymple Hamilton, K.C.B. and John H. Stevenson, O.B.E. and the Honorary Secretary was J. Watson Blair.
The inside pages of the Syllabus describe a varied and interesting programme of twelve events, including visits to the Military Tattoo in Edinburgh and to the King's Theatre in Glasgow for a production of Gilbert & Sullivan's popular opera "The Mikado" by the Orpheus Club. Social Evenings included the "Macharg Quaich Bowling Competition" at Willowbank Bowling Green (reputedly Glasgow’s first Bowling Club) and the Annual Burns' Night at the Y.M.C.A.
